About Bristlecone Montessori School

Our History

Bristlecone Montessori School was started by Jessie Hoehn in 2006 in the facilities originally occupied by the Bristlecone Children’s School in Alma, Colorado. Jessie and her staff continue the tradition of authentic Montessori in our high country community, expanding the school’s programs to meet the needs of the communities it serves.

The Bristlecone pine tree is the oldest known tree species in the world. It usually grows at elevations of 10,000-11,000 feet and it grows naturally in Alma. It is such an inspirational piece of nature as it survives extremely harsh elements and lives longer than any other tree.

Our Mission

The mission of Bristlecone Montessori School is to provide high quality, authentic Montessori education to children of all family backgrounds and socio-economic status.

To achieve this mission, Bristlecone Montessori School uses the principles and philosophies developed by Dr. Maria Montessori, creating an environment that allows children to explore, learn and joyfully master their world. The school is committed to the Montessori approach to education, and associates philosophically with Association Montessori Internationale (AMI), the worldwide organization founded by Dr. Montessori herself.

Our Earthly Mission

At Bristlecone Montessori School, we are committed to serving organic foods, using earth friendly cleaning products, recycling, reusing and composting. We believe that we can make a difference for our wonderful earth by making such simple changes.

Our Philosophy

Bristlecone Montessori is committed to providing a loving, peaceful environment for children. We are dedicated to nurturing the natural curiosity and love of learning within each child. We value each child as an individual and guide each child through their own development.

We follow Dr. Montessori’s Method of Education knowing it holds the truths to learning for children. The children are the central figures in their own development.

The prepared environment consists of Practical Life activities, Sensorial materials, Mathematics, and Language and Cultural extensions. We also have an outdoor environment consisting of an organic vegetable garden, flower beds, compost and we continue to enjoy the Peace Garden located at the School’s original facility.

“The discovery of the powers of the child is the most important discovery humanity has ever made and uncovers the very roots of our life.” -Maria Montessori

Bristlecone Peace Garden

Education for Peace plays an important role within the Montessori classroom. In 2002, this idea extended into an outdoor environment created at the school’s original facility, 124 North Main Street in Alma, by an inspired family: Dave McKee, Lori Whipple, and their daughter Ema.

The garden consists of a walking path that leads to a Peace Pole, a compost site, shade shelters, flower beds and an organic vegetable garden.

The Peace Garden is a registered Peace Site. This is a place where people are committed to protecting the environment. It is a place where we promote intercultural understanding and celebrate differences. We seek peace within ourselves and relationships with others. We reach out in service to others and work towards a just world.

The Peace Pole has “May Peace Prevail on Earth” engraved on each of the four sides, each side in a different language: English, Sign Language, Ute (a native language to the South Park region), and Esperanto (a global language without any specific cultural attachments). This pole represents the actual Peace Site.

The Peace Garden is meant for public appreciation so please visit this site often and together we can create a positive impact on our community and our planet.

Volunteers

We welcome and encourage parental support throughout the year. Please fill out and return the Volunteer Interest form with your enrollment materials. Check the monthly newsletters for additional scheduled opportunities. If you have ideas or special talents that you would like to share with the children, please let us know!

Visitors

All visitors must sign in. It is best for the children when the visits are scheduled. We encourage parents/legal guardians to come and observe at least once during the school year. We ask that all visitors respect our children and their environment and observe as graciously as possible without distracting or interrupting the children during their daily routines.
